Starting 1 September 2020, Chrome will no longer trust any certificates older than one year

Dean Coclin, chairman of the CA/Browser Forum, has posted on Twitter the announcement that Google will follow Apple's lead in limiting the validity of public SSL/TLS certificates to one year. This decision was not a surprise, since Google has always been the main supporter of short-lived certificates.

From the point of this decision’s official announcement by the Chrome developers, only certificates with a validity period of 398 days or less (1 year + the additional period allocated for renewal) will be considered trusted. According to Dean Coclin, this decision has already been formally adopted, and therefore it should be expected that from 1 September 2020, it will enter into force.

All certificates issued before this date will be trusted. So, if you purchase a certificate for two years, issued on August 31, 2020, then it will be considered trusted for Chrome.

Other major browsers will have to make similar statements in the near future.

Will it be possible to purchase multi-year certificates after 1 September 2020?

Yes, it will be. Even after 1 September, you will be able to buy certificates valid for two to five years from us as part of multi-year subscription packages. Such packages are presented on site with prices. A five-year certificate, as practice shows, is the most cost-effective – it gives maximum savings and allows you not to worry about regular renewals. We send notifications by email, so you can always quickly re-issue a certificate.
