Mozilla will stop trusting SSL certificates issued for more than 1 year

Mozilla 1 year ssl

Starting 1 September 2020, Mozilla will no longer trust SSL certificates issued for more than 1 year (only certificates with a period of 398 days or less will be trusted). This decision does not come as a surprise because many major browsers have already supported this initiative.

The decision to limit the validity of SSL certificates comes with greater security

The main reasons for this reduction in the validity of SSL certificates:

  • Increasing flexibility in phasing out old certificates when vulnerabilities in encryption algorithms are discovered.
  • Limiting the possibility of compromising sites because private encryption keys will change regularly. If a TLS certificate is stolen, cybercriminals will have less time to carry out any malicious actions.
  • Hosting providers and third parties will not be able to use the certificate for a long time if they refuse to renew the domain.

What Mozilla's solution means for site owners

The above changes only apply to new certificates issued on or after 1 September 2020.

If you have an existing 2-year certificate, you can continue to use it until it expires. It will not stop working and will be trusted even after 1st September.

Also, you can always buy SSL certificates from us in the form of bundled offers for a period of 2 to 5 years. These offers are great savings. You can get a reliable SSL certificate from a trusted CA. You do not have to constantly monitor the validity of your certificates - we send email notifications for quick reissuance.
