Google Chrome Developers Plan to Remove Lock Icon for HTTPS Sites
If the changes are accepted, sites accessible via HTTPS will no longer have a lock icon in Chrome 93. At the same time, resources that operate over HTTP will continue to be marked as "Not secure".
You can test the change now in builds of Chrome 93 Beta and Chrome 94 Canary. To do this, you need to set up the Omnibox Updated connection security indicators flag.
- Enter chrome: // flags in the address bar of Chrome 93 Beta or Chrome 94 Canary.
- Look for the “security indicators” section.
- Set the “Omnibox Updated connection security indicators” flag to Enabled.
- Restart the browser.
Furthermore, Chrome 93 will introduce a corporate policy LockIconInAddressBarEnabled for companies that are not ready to opt out of displaying a lock in the address bar for HTTPS sites.
The change is currently in the testing phase. Even if the current UI is changed, users will still be able to identify unsecured sites by observing the "Not secure" indicator.
The release of Chrome 93 is expected to be on August 31, 2021.
